Eye Contact

I love public transport. New York. Paris. Chicago. Berlin. London. It doesn't matter. I love them all. (Click here for a witty ode to the Chicago Transit Authority.) If you, too, ride public transport, you may have noticed that strangers usually never make eye contact with each other while riding. Today, however, is different. Today in New York, people are more observant. They watch each other. Any sudden movements and the eyes shift toward that direction. Any medium brown men enter the train and the eyes shift toward him. One tall, 40-something year old man who enters at the Wall Street station wears a suit and looks especially nervous. He eyes everyone. Today, there are fewer people on the trains in New York because many prefered to walk or take a cab. The fear caused by the explosions in London ripples in New York.
